Community Involvement
Houston Center has started a new partnership with its second FACES of CHANGE® school, Crockett Elementary . FACES of Change® is a three-year partnership celebrating the children and families of an outstanding local elementary school, the customers and employees of a Crescent property, and the community.
An Introduction:
- Title I school with an enrollment of approximately 360 students.
- The free/reduced breakfast and lunch program serves 99% of the students.
- Free bus transportation is provided for 20% of the students.
- Sixty children participate in after-school academic and athletic programs provided by Majors Program.
- Attendance represents a zone composed of distinct residential areas, an apartment complex and an established neighborhood.
- An HISD charter school providing curriculum flexibility to create a unique program which caters to the individuality of the student population.
- The staff has implemented the Integrated Thematic Instruction Model I (ITI) which is a brain compatible researched program which consists mostly of concepts, skills and attitudes/values that students obtain through hands on experiences.
Ethnic distribution:
- 97% Hispanic
- .6% African American
- 1.1% Anglo
- .3% Asian
Crockett offers a variety of programs to meet the needs of its students:
- The Bilingual Program served 67% of the children in 2000-2001.
- The Exceptional Education Program offers a resource room for 6% of the school's population.
- The Enrichment/Fine Arts Program offers violin, cello, marimba, guitar, flutes, hand bell choir, mariachi, drama, ballet, folkloric dance, choir and Girl Scouts.
The staff of Crockett Elementary multi-tasks as there are no departments within the school. Each teacher teaches their respective grade and also teaches an elective; for example, one of the third grade teachers may also teach piano lessons during her free period.
Crockett is host to several community improvement programs which focus on character building through community projects, inspirational speakers and incentive programs. The staff has seen dramatic results in students that were seemingly unreachable.
- The Head Start Program has 40 students enrolled and helps develop social skills and gives the pre-k student a glimpse of school life.
- The Even Start Program teaches the parents of the community language skills, basic math skills, computer applications, helps them prepare for the GED exam and provides free day care for those parents with young children.
- The Dare to Dream program, for fourth through sixth graders, teaches at-risk students that they have choices.
Crockett is devoted to making their school the center of the community. By improving the daily life of each child they come closer to their vision: a community that is proud, connected and loyal.
